Project Ara, Google's development plan for modular smartphones, is expected to become available on the market in 2015 with Quanta Computer reportedly being the main hardware supplier. Orders are expected to boost the Taiwan-based ODM's non-notebook revenues, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Quanta declined to comment about its clients or orders.

For 2015, Quanta is expected to stay as the leader of the notebook manufacturing industry and the company will also be the largest notebook supplier for Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Apple. Quanta has also received strong orders from brand vendors such as Acer and Asustek Computer for 2015, with its notebook shipments standing a chance of reaching 50 million units in the year, the sources said.

However, with the notebook industry seeing difficulties achieving further growth, non-notebook businesses have become a new focus for Quanta, the sources noted.

Although Quanta does not have many smartphone orders, the company continues to develop technology for 4G-related applications and the Project Ara orders from Google are expected to provide strong profits.

Quanta recently noted that its non-notebook businesses currently contribute about 35% of its revenues.

In addition to Quanta, other notebook ODMs have also been aggressive about non-notebook businesses. Inventec's subsidiary Inventec Appliance has received orders from China-based Xiaomi, while Compal Electronics and Wistron have both entered into Apple's supply chain for handheld devices. Quanta has landed orders for the Apple Watch, the sources said.
