Samsung Display aims to bring down pricing of small- to medium-size AMOLED displays within 10% of that for LCDs in 2016, according to to a report from China Times.

Currently Samsung's AMOLED pricing is about 30% more expensive than LCDs for small- to medium-size applications but that is expected to drop to around 10% in 2016 following completion of 5.5G facilities that will bump up the maker's overall capacity.

The report said the maker anticipates increased demand for high-end technologies in 2016 and is looking to AMOLED as its main panel technology to compete with LTPS and IGZO technology from other makers in addition to growing LCD capacity from other makers.

Japan Display (JDI) is expected to be a main contender in the LTPS and IGZO segments in 2016 in addition to LG Display, which will also focus more on production of AMOLED and LTPS. Taiwan makers are also looking to expand production of high-end LCDs on 6G facilities in 2016.

China handset vendors are expected to be some of the biggst customers for Samsung in 2016 as Oppo, Huawei and other vendors aim to release more smartphones equipped with AMOLED.

The report also noted that 5-inch a-Si panel pricing has droped roughly 20% since the beginning of 2015 but is expected to ease throughout December due to vendors in China releasing new smartphones into 2016 prior to the Lunar New Year holiday season in February 2016.
