China-based touch panel maker Truly Opto-Electronics has produced 5.7-inch sample AMOLED panels at an existing factory acquired from Samsung Display, with such panels under trial use by China-based white-box smartphone vendors and independent design houses (IDHs), according to Taiwan-based smartphone supply chain makers.

Samsung Display has dominated global supply of smartphone-use AMOLED panels and Samsung Electronics has so far been the largest client, the sources said. Based on component orders for shipments scheduled in the first quarter of 2017, smartphones to be launched by Samsung Electronics in the quarter will decrease significantly on year. In order to offset reduction in demand from Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display has actively touted China-based smartphone vendors, including Huawei Technologies, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi Technology, as well as white-box ones for adoption of AMOLED panels, the sources indicated.

In addition to Truly Opto-Electronics, China-based panel makers BOE Technology, Royal, EverDisplay Optronics (Shanghai), Tianma Micro-electronics and Kunshan Govisionox Optoelectronics have begun to prepare for production of AMOLED panels, the sources noted.
